Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing
Another way of caring for patients in their home

The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing has a long-standing tradition of educating its students to provide quality healthcare in variety of venues, including home-based settings. As a residential school during its first fifty years, the School’s students were an integral part of the work of the FNS nurses in Leslie County and beyond. As a distance learning program accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, FSMFN continues to provide unmatched training for Certified Nurse-Midwives and Nurse Practitioners; training based right in our students homes and in their home communities.

FSMFN graduates recognize the importance of caring for their patients in the patients’ home. Several of our Nurse-Midwifery graduates have thriving home-birth practices. Many Nurse Practitioner graduates perform home visits in ways simients for which it is appropriate, and plans are in place to expand the level of home-based care that can be offered.  In the not too distant future, even more expectant mothers will receive postpartum home visits at one, three, and six weeks after delivery.  They will be an invaluable service to women during this critical period.  Often, it is much more difficult to make follow up appointments when caring for a newborn and the nurse-milar to our own Sarah Noggle. Even closer to home, two of our Nurse-Midwifery graduates working at the W.W. Hall, Jr, Center for Mothers and Children at Mary Breckinridge Hospital provide home-based care to patidwives see expanding postpartum home visits as an important step in providing the highest level of service possible.

The School is thrilled to be part of the FNS family, and remains honored to champion Mrs. Breckinridge’s vision for the Service, particularly by educating Certified Nurse-Midwives and Nurse Practitioners to provide high-quality, compassionate care in rural and underserved areas.
