“Rooted in the Past”
Caring for our patients in their own homes

In founding the Frontier Nursing Service in 1926, Mary Breckinridge set out to bring healthcare to the people she felt needed it most. While the provision of this care often took in a district nursing center or the Hyden Hospital, many times it was in the patient’s own home. That tradition continues today.

The Mary Breckinridge Home Health Agency still carries on a central part of the Mrs. Breckinridge’s work: the provision of the care in patient’s homes. Licensed in 1966, this agency, according to the Kentucky Home Health Association, was the second home health agency in Kentucky.  The agency serves patients in Leslie, Clay, and Perry Counties by striving to assist those with routine healthcare problems through the provision of quality in-home care.

The Agency performs approximately 1,200 visits each month to patients who need skilled nursing care, personal care, physical therapy, nursing aide care, homemaking services, respite care, pediatric services, infusion therapy, diabetes care, cardio/pulmonary care and treatment, as well as post surgical care and wound management. Working with our Certified Nurse-Midwives, expectant mothers can still receive some care in their homes.
While the Agency is not designed as a substitute for regular healthcare provider visits or emergency room services when needed, we believe that, for many individuals, the home is the most positive setting for restoring, maintaining and promoting an optimal level of health and physical and well being.
